External Insulation
External Wall Insulation is like wrapping your house in a quilted jacket, keeping the cold out and the warmth in.

The insulation is fixed to the exterior of the external walls and a range of surface finishes can be achieved to suit your house allowing different decorative finishes. The installation includes dealing with window cills and downpipes and other ancillaries such as Satellite dishes, external wall lights etc, all included in the works.

How it works

An adhesive layer is applied to the existing exterior wall. The thermal insulation is fixed above this adhesive and the fixed with mechanical anchors. This insulation material is then covered with a base course and reinforced fibreglass mesh. Finally a fishing coat is applied to provide the desired finish.

Cavity Insulation
Century Retrofit can inject insulation into existing cavities in suitable situations proving a barrier to heat loss through the external walls.

Depending on the solution identified this insulation can be either dry bead or an expanding foam insulation.

Kingspan Ecobead is an exclusive insulation system that is made of 100% recycled material with the environmental advantages that entails.

How it works

Using specialised equipment, a series of small diameter holes are drilled through the outer leaf of the external wall into the cavity and the chosen material (foam or bead and adhesive) are pumped in in a controlled manner ensuring the cavity is filled from the bottom up and ensuring proper sealing around all window and door frames. Upon completion the drilled holes are filled and finished to match the existing wall finish as closely as possible. The spacing of the holes varies with the type of fill utilised.

Internal Insulation
In certain cases, particularly where there is no desire to change the external appearance of a house or there is no cavity, it may be more appropriate to provide the insulation to the inner face of the external walls. Often referred to as dry-lining this is also suitable where humidity and drafts are issues when used in conjunction with proper ventilation.

How it works

Internal insulation involves installing insulation boards to the inside of the walls and then applying a new internal wall surface (plasterboard) either by adhesive or mechanically which is then finished to the desired result. This work in particular cases also sometimes involves the construction of a new stud wall beside the existing wall on which the new surface is fixed depending on the type and form of the original structure. This work is normally carried out in conjunction with refurbishment works as it may impact on other finishes such as skirtings and covings etc.

Century Retrofit are happy to discuss this option on a case specific basis.

Attic/roof Insulation
Properly insulating your attic is probably one of the quickest, easiest and most cost-effective ways to improve heat retention and reduce energy bills. Even if you already have attic insulation if it is not up to modern standards you could still be losing heat this way.

Insulation your attic keeps the heat below your ceiling and in the living part of the house.

How it works

Attic insulation normally comprises two layers, the first laid parallel to and between the joists and the second perpendicular to and across the joists thereby ensuring complete coverage. Typically, these layers consist of rockwool or glass fibre materials but solid boards can also be used. This can be discussed on a case specific basis.

Icynene Sprayfoam
The Icynene Spray Foam Insulation System is a series of soft, flexible spray foam insulation products that delivers up to 50% greater energy savings when compared to other home insulation products.Icynene is the only foam on the market to have achieved BBA, ETA and IAB certifications. Icynene absorbs the lowest amount of moisture and has the highest level of vapour resistivity of any soft foam on the market. This is a better choice to allow your home to “breathe”!

How it works

Icynene is applied as a liquid that expands up to 100 times its volume in seconds to fill all cracks and crevices, remaining flexible, so that the integrity of the building envelope seal remains intact over time. Its formula has a thermal conductivity of 0.034 - 0.039 W/mK. It acts as a complete insulation and air barrier to minimize air leakage and seal the building envelope for optimal tightness.

Icynene can be used for attic insulation, cavity wall insulation, drylining insulation, roof insulation, sound insulation and more. It stays flexible and follows all movements of the building structure without cracking over time. Once installed, Icynene spray foam works for the life of the home.

Floor
Up to 10% of heat loss can occur through a poorly or uninsulated floor.

Depending on the type and construction of your ground floor, e.g., solid concrete slab, suspended timber floor with void under etc., it may be possible to place insulation on top of the existing surface thereby raising the finished floor level or more likely to remove the existing floor and build up in new layers including insulation and radon treatment. This work is often done in conjunction with the installation of underfloor heating as part of Deep retrofit works.
